What counts as a lab

A research organization that builds or studies AI or data systems and publishes its work. Five types: a company lab inside a larger company (Google DeepMind, Meta FAIR, Microsoft Research), a startup lab whose business is models or research (OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral AI), a nonprofit institute (Ai2, EleutherAI, METR), an academic lab or public research institute (MIT CSAIL, Mila, CWI), and a government body that tests or builds AI (the UK AI Security Institute, the US CAISI). Data systems groups (DuckLabs, CWI Database Architectures, TUM, CMU) are here too, since much of AI runs on their work.

Where each fact comes from

• Founding year, headquarters, handles: Wikidata, Wikipedia, or the lab's own about page, linked under Sources on each lab page. When no source gives a founding year, the lab shows n/a and is left off the founding strip.
• Known for: one line written by hand, backed by 3 to 5 landmark contributions, each linked to the paper or the lab's own post. arXiv titles are checked against arXiv.
• Leaders: from Leaders where it tracks the lab (it cites a source for every role), otherwise the lab's own leadership page.
• Models: the lab's best-ranked models on the Models podium this week; for labs not ranked there, notable models from their own pages.
• Papers: the lab's page and papers on Papers, where it has one.
• Funding and compute: the labs' own announcements and filings, plus rounds that Funding finds naming the lab.
• GitHub and Hugging Face: the organization must exist; X handles are kept only when Wikidata or the lab's own website links them.

Updates and history

Every Monday at 11:30 UTC a run pulls leaders, models, papers, blogs and funding from the other fru.dev sites. On the first Monday of each month it also fetches every lab's website, blog and landmark links and lists the broken ones for a person to fix. It makes no AI model calls. Nothing is overwritten silently: every added lab and every changed fact is kept in an append-only history, on the Changes page and at /api/changes.

People

Leaders are listed with their public professional role and the page that states it. Photos come from Wikimedia Commons (matched through Wikidata by name and lab or company, never by name alone) or from the lab's own leadership page, credited on hover with the license. Where there is no such photo, the person shows as initials. Nothing is copied from LinkedIn, X or image search.

About this data

Facts from each lab's own pages, Wikidata, Wikipedia and arXiv, with the source linked; leaders, models and papers come from the fru.dev sites that track them. Synced every Monday and re-checked monthly; unverified labs are marked. The list grows as new labs are added. Photos from Wikimedia Commons and official company pages, with credit. Logos via logo.dev; trademarks belong to their owners. Company facts are shared with companies.fru.dev.
